Cannabis genetics are often explained like a family tree.

Landrace sits closer to older regional roots.

Hybrid describes crossing and selection that shaped much of modern commercial cannabis.

Neither term is a quality grade.

Landrace

Landrace generally refers to cannabis populations associated with long-term adaptation to particular geographic regions before modern commercial breeding mixed many lineages together.

The word points toward:

• regional history;
• local adaptation;
• older plant populations.

It does not mean every plant from a region is genetically identical or untouched by human selection.

Hybrid

A hybrid is produced by crossing genetic lines.

Breeders may select plants for traits such as:

• structure;
• flowering time;
• aroma;
• cannabinoid profile;
• yield;
• resilience;
• appearance.

The resulting line can be selected and crossed again.

Why Modern Cannabis Has Mixed Ancestry

Commercial breeding has been active for decades.
